The newly renamed 'K-Orchestra' has begun designing a new orchestra to showcase the identity and creative capabilities of Korean orchestras on the global stage as a resident group at the world's only natural acoustic sound-focusing outdoor performance hall (Munmak, Wonju, Gangwon Province). The organizers say at least three years of simulations will be required before full-scale operation begins. This hall boasts the unique distinction of a patented, world-class space capable of performing solely through natural acoustics, without microphones or electronic amplification. Reinterpreting the original structure of traditional Korean madangnori through modern architecture and acoustics, it is a space that embodies both a musical instrument and a philosophy of sound.
Development Driven by Creation, Performance, Audience, and Ecology
Design and construction are currently underway at several locations in the region, under the leadership of world-renowned architect Lee Hyung-ho. Visits from international experts from countries like Italy, Germany, and the UK are also steadily accelerating the organization's initial goal of pioneering the global market. K-Classic Chairman Tak Gye-seok stated, "This space, through its ideal combination with the orchestra, will mark an inflection point in the identity and content development of K-culture. Audiences, who have long struggled to adapt to the Western-style indoor concert culture with its strictly controlled autonomy, will say, 'This is exactly what we've been waiting for.'" At the same time, the K-Orchestra aims to break away from the monolithic Western repertoire bias and create a "K-Classic ecosystem" that integrates the work (creation), performance (orchestra), and audience (K-Audience) to tell the story of our history and lives.
Creative Residencies and Building a Global Network
The K-Orchestra has already established a career network by appointing 108 world-class conductors from 37 countries as "K-Orchestra Honorary Conductors" from 2021 to 2023. Furthermore, the plan is for this space to serve as the final stage for the Masterpiece Festival, offering experimentation and challenge, while audiences can experience nature and healing. Ultimately, the K-Orchestra will use the Sound Focusing Hall as its main stage to demonstrate its identity and creative capabilities through sound. Therefore, the orchestra's substantial composition, rather than a one-off performance, is expected to take considerable time. The orchestra will focus on promotion in 2026, while establishing its direction through discussions and chamber music arrangements.
