The K-Classic Organizing Committee will host the K-Sistema Ensemble Festival from September 5 to 8, 2026, at the Open Stage in Wonju, Gangwon Province. This festival is drawing attention not merely as a concert series, but as an experimental project aimed at transforming the structure of music education in Korea.
■ “From Solo-Centered to Ensemble-Centered Education”
Current music education is largely focused on private lessons and competitions—a “solo system.” However, the essence of an orchestra lies in ensemble performance, and relying solely on orchestra rehearsals for such experience is inefficient in terms of time, cost, and space.
K-Sistema proposes a new educational model that integrates ensemble practice into the early stages of music education, making it a daily and foundational experience.
■ Learning the Korean Musical Language from an Early Age
K-Classic pursues the integration of traditional Korean instruments—such as gayageum, haegeum, and piri—with Western instruments. However, this fusion is rarely addressed within existing educational systems.
As a result, students often face the limitation of having to relearn this musical language later in life. K-Sistema aims to build an environment where students can internalize the Korean ensemble idiom from a young age.
■ A “Tour-Type” Music Education Integrated with Culture
This festival goes beyond performances by presenting a new form of music education that combines:
Local cultural experiences
Concerts in traditional houses and historical sites
Story-based tour programs
It also seeks to establish a foundation for international youth exchange, contributing to the development of a Korean-style El Sistema (K-Sistema) model.
■ “Beyond Technique: Toward Structure and Philosophy”
While Korean musicians have excelled in international competitions, a globally competitive musical structure and system is still lacking.
Through this festival, the K-Classic Organizing Committee emphasizes a shift from a technique-oriented approach to one centered on structure and philosophy. In the age of AI, creativity and collaboration—skills best cultivated through ensemble practice—are becoming increasingly essential.
■ A Starting Point for Future Music Leaders
The K-Sistema Ensemble Festival is not just a performance event, but a platform for nurturing the next generation of music leaders. Just as El Sistema produced figures like Gustavo Dudamel, K-Sistema is expected to serve as a launching point for new Korean musicians to expand onto the global stage.
